MADISON, WI — Senator Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove) joined community members in Sun Prairie, the Groundhog Capital of the World, to celebrate the annual Groundhog Day tradition and to present the Governor’s official proclamation recognizing the historic occasion.
The celebration centers on Sun Prairie’s most famous resident, Jimmy the Groundhog, whose seasonal prediction has drawn national attention for 78 years. While rooted in folklore, the event highlights community pride, tradition, and a shared sense of fun during Wisconsin’s winter season.
“Sun Prairie truly earns its title as the Groundhog Capital of the World,” Senator Ratcliff stated. “Today is a recognition of the community’s commitment to preserving this beloved tradition and the joy it brings to people across Wisconsin and beyond.”
Sun Prairie’s Groundhog Day celebration is nationally recognized and reflects the city’s creativity, volunteer spirit, and dedication to keeping this unique tradition alive.
This year, Jimmy the Groundhog did not see his shadow which predicts we will have an early spring.
“Whether Jimmy sees his shadow or not, Groundhog Day reminds us that spring is coming,” senator Ratcliff added. “More importantly, it reminds us how traditions like this bring people together and brighten even the coldest winter days.”
