Despite Trump’s sweeping tariffs costing the average American household $1,000 more per year, Van Orden still supports them

Today, Derrick Van Orden voted *again* to shield Donald Trump from Congressional oversight on his sweeping, reckless tariffs that are raising costs for Wisconsinites.

The pivotal vote comes as a new report from the Tax Foundation found Trump’s tariffs cost the average American household $1,000 last year. The cost is expected to rise in 2026 to $1,300 if existing tariffs that House Republicans voted on today stay in place.

This isn’t the first time Van Orden voted to rubber stamp Trump’s sweeping tariffs. In September of 2025, Van Orden voted to protect price-hiking tariffs, after doing the same thing in March of 2025. Today’s vote would have shielded oversight until the Summer of 2026.

REMINDER: Van Orden has repeatedly defended the administration’s trade policy, told farmers that tariffs are actually *benefiting* them, all while admitting he knows that Wisconsin is negatively impacted.

  • WQOW: “When it comes to how President Trump has handled tariffs, Van Orden said they have been a success because of the number of other countries that want to negotiate trade deals.”

  • WXOW: “[Van Orden] admitted that trade tensions due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs are hitting farmers hard … ‘There are folks in different industries that are negatively affected by these tariffs,’ said Van Orden.”

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Derrick Van Orden votes for a third time to approve the reckless tariffs raising costs on hardworking families and undercutting Wisconsin’s farmers and agricultural economy. Van Orden pledged to lower the cost of living and stand up for farmers on the campaign trail, but he’s done the exact opposite. Promises made, promises broken.”
