WATCH: Senator Baldwin Calls on White House to “Get Serious” on Negotiations
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) released the following statement after voting against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill that failed to include accountability and commonsense guardrails to rein in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Earlier in the day, Senator Baldwin held a virtual press conference laying out the guardrails she’s fighting to include in the funding bill and called on the White House to “get serious” on negotiations to stop ICE’s chaos.

“President Trump and ICE are totally out of control, and it’s putting American lives on the line. We need to stop the lawlessness, chaos, and violence we’ve all watched firsthand. ICE agents should be held to the same standards as our local law enforcement, they should have real warrants to arrest people, and they should take off the masks. This is commonsense stuff that Wisconsinites support,” said Senator Baldwin. “Today, we had a choice: give ICE a blank check to continue wreaking havoc on Americans, or say no and that we need to do better. I know better is possible, but the White House and Republicans need to get serious and listen to the American people who are demanding ICE be reined in.”
Two-thirds of Americans say ICE and Border Patrol have gone “too far” with their tactics. A Marquette Law School poll found 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of the job ICE is doing, while 3 in 4 Americans support making changes at ICE. After the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, Senator Baldwin announced that she would not support any additional funding for DHS without increased transparency, accountability, and stronger guardrails to rein in ICE. Senator Baldwin also called on Secretary Noem to resign immediately.
