Rep. Allen released the following statement on the passage of SB 620 in the Assembly:
“Monitoring the whereabouts of released sex offenders is important for the safety of our community, particularly our children. This is true even for those who have no permanent address.”
Current law requires all sex offender registrants to provide an address. However, only those convicted of certain sex offenses are required to be tracked with a GPS ankle monitor. Under SB 620, if a registrant is unable to provide an address, the registrant must be tracked using a GPS system monitored by the Department of Corrections.
A recent study has suggested that in Wisconsin, an estimated 16% of homeless individuals are released sex offenders.
