Madison, WI – Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) issued the following statement after “Zoey’s Law” passed the Assembly earlier today:
“This bill closes dangerous gaps in Wisconsin’s child protection and mandatory reporting laws. Currently, child welfare agencies are required to refer suspected or threatened sexual abuse or trafficking to law enforcement within 12 hours. However, referrals for other forms of abuse, including physical abuse, drug-related abuse, and emotional abuse, are left to discretion.
Zoey’s Law would require that all reports of suspected or threatened child abuse be referred to law enforcement. By closing these loopholes and ensuring that every report is taken seriously and acted upon, we strengthen protections for our most vulnerable children and work to prevent future tragedies.
We owe it to Zoey and to every child in Wisconsin to ensure no warning sign is ever ignored. Passing Zoey’s Law honors her memory with meaningful action and sends a clear message that every child’s safety matters, every report will be treated seriously, and every possible step will be taken to prevent another family from experiencing such a tragedy.”
After passing the Senate earlier this session, “Zoey’s Law” now heads to the governor’s desk.
Rep. Green also voted in favor of several other bills during today’s floor session:
- “Red Tape Reset” package that will transform Wisconsin’s regulatory landscape by cutting excessive regulations, restoring government accountability, and increasing transparency in the rulemaking process.
- Senate Bill 498, which establishes freedom of expression and academic freedom standards on University of Wisconsin campuses and technical colleges.
