MADISON – Senator Eric Wimberger (R-Gillett) released the following statement after Governor Tony Evers delivered his final State of the State address:

“Tonight, Governor Evers touted the accomplishments from the last seven years of a Republican legislature, claiming our achievements as his own after seeing great results.

From raising property taxes with his 400-year veto to closing homeless veterans shelters despite having the funds to run them, the Governor’s actions have made life in Wisconsin harder. If the Governor had a Democratic legislature to enact his proposals and wish-list budgets, Wisconsin would be billions of dollars in the hole with higher and higher taxes.

The Governor also laid out a plan to close Green Bay Correctional Institution by releasing criminals into our neighborhoods. He plans to continue issuing pardons on top of that. The safety of law-abiding Wisconsinites is clearly not one of his priorities.

Unfortunately, the Governor has also abandoned what used to be a mainstream Democrat position: stopping illegal immigration. He alluded to making Wisconsin a sanctuary state, claiming our hard-working and innovative agricultural industry can’t survive without taking advantage of illegal labor.

Meanwhile, the Legislature will work to address the issues facing Wisconsin families: lowering the cost of living, returning our budget surplus to the taxpayers, and fighting for legislation to tackle PFAS contamination across the state.”
