Madison – Today, Representative Jill Billings joined fellow Assembly Democrats to push for a vote to finally pass postpartum Medicaid expansion and save the lives of mothers and babies in Wisconsin. Rep. Billings released the following statement:

“After years of advocacy and a full day of Democrats proposing amendments that would add postpartum Medicaid coverage to every bill on the floor, Republicans have finally agreed to pass legislation expanding postpartum Medicaid coverage in session tomorrow. Wisconsin will become the 49th state with one year of postpartum Medicaid coverage.”

“This moment has been years in the making. In 2021, I coauthored AB 592, which would have expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to one year. Approximately 30% of maternal deaths every year occur more than 60 days after delivery. By expanding postpartum Medicaid, we will save dozens of lives every year. While I wish this moment had come sooner for the women across the state who could have benefited from essential health care, I am thrilled that this legislation will finally make it across the finish line.”
