TOWN OF SPRINGDALE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting an investigation into an officer involved death that occurred in the Town of Springdale in Dane County, Wis. on the evening of Sunday, March 15.

At approximately 5:09 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, officers with the Verona Police Department initiated a pursuit of a vehicle wanted in connection to a burglary and stolen vehicle. During the pursuit, the subject’s vehicle became disabled near the intersection of Highway 151 and Spring Rose Road in the Town of Springdale. The subject exited the vehicle with a weapon and an altercation ensued. One officer with the Verona Police Department discharged their firearm striking the subject.

EMS was contacted and life saving measures were attempted. The subject was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.

No members of law enforcement or other members of the public were injured during this incident.

The incident was captured via the on-scene officers body worn cameras.

The involved officer will be placed on administrative leave, per the agency’s policies.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Dane County Medical Examiner and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation. DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over the investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
