Rep. Sequanna Taylor Introduces Plan to Cut Property Taxes for Low-Income Seniors by 75%
Madison, WI — Representative Sequanna Taylor has introduced legislation to deliver significant property tax relief to low-income seniors across Wisconsin, helping them stay in their homes as costs continue to rise.
The bill creates a refundable income tax credit equal to 75 percent of property taxes paid on a senior’s primary residence. To qualify, homeowners must be age 65 or older, have a household income of $24,500 or less, and own a home assessed at $300,000 or less.
“This is about keeping seniors in their homes,” said Rep. Taylor. “People on fixed incomes should not be pushed out of the neighborhoods they helped build and raised their families in. This bill gives relief where it is needed most.”
The credit is fully refundable, meaning eligible seniors will receive the full benefit even if they owe no income tax. Any remaining balance will be issued as a direct payment. To ensure the relief is targeted, the bill limits eligibility and prevents recipients from claiming other property tax credits in the same year.
The proposal also includes a state appropriation to guarantee payments are made to qualifying seniors. If passed, the credit would take effect for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025. For more information, contact Representative Taylor’s office.
