Madison, Wis. – Representative Priscilla A. Prado (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding Dolores Huerta’s recent remarks:

“I am deeply saddened by Dolores Huerta’s recent statement surrounding the nature of her relationship with Cesar Chavez. No woman should have to carry pain in silence, or feel forced to choose between her purpose and her truth.

“At the same time, I recognize and honor Huerta’s strength and tenacity. Her unwavering commitment to organizing, to advocating for farmworkers, and to advancing labor rights helped shape a movement that changed this country. Her strength, even in the face of adversity, reflects the often unnoticed perseverance and resilience of so many Latina women.

“As we reflect, we must be clear: the actions of one individual do not define an entire community. They do not define Latino men, Latino families, or the values we hold. Our values remain rooted in dignity, hard work, and lifting one another up.

“Most importantly, we must ensure that future generations of women, especially Latina women, do not feel that their voices must be silenced to make progress possible. Their leadership and truth must be at the forefront.

“As a legislator and as a woman, I remain committed to fostering environments where women are heard, protected, and empowered.

“Juntos hacemos más.”
