Green Bay, WI — Following reporting from Wisconsin Public Radio and WLUK-TV FOX 11, the shutdown of NEWCAP Inc. after financial mismanagement has put nearly 100 Green Bay-area families at risk of losing critical housing support. NEWCAP, a longtime provider of federally funded housing assistance, is closing after issues tied to its leadership, leaving federal funds frozen and families in limbo. While local nonprofits have stepped up to continue services, federal restrictions are currently blocking the transfer of those funds, threatening housing stability for families who rely on them.

State Representative Amaad Rivera-Wagner issued the following statement:

“Hold the wrongdoer accountable. Don’t evict the victims.”

“Nearly 100 families in our community are now at risk because of the actions of one person. That is unacceptable. This is exactly what frustrates people about government. The people responsible walk away, while working families are left to deal with the consequences. Our neighbors did everything right. They followed the rules. They relied on programs that were supposed to be there for them. And now they are being left in limbo because of failures they had nothing to do with.

What makes this worse is that solutions already exist. Local nonprofits are ready to step in right now. But the federal government is taking an arbitrary stance that blocks these funds from being transferred. Government at its best shows up for people in their toughest moments. Right now, it needs to. In Green Bay, we take care of each other. Our community is stepping up. Now the federal government needs to do its part.

I have been in contact with Tammy Baldwin’s office to push for a resolution. My message to our federal delegation is simple: hold the person responsible accountable, but do not punish the families who did nothing wrong.

”Rep. Rivera-Wagner is actively working with federal, state, and local partners to ensure continuity of housing support and accountability for any wrongdoing.
