La Crosse, WI — County Board candidate Chris Muller announced today that he has formally submitted a complaint to the La Crosse County Clerk’s Office requesting a review of potential campaign finance violations involving incumbent Steve Doyle.

The complaint raises concerns about multiple reported contributions of $1,000 from individual donors in recent campaign finance filings. Based on guidance from the County Clerk’s Office, contributions to county board candidates are limited to $500 per individual per calendar year.

Muller’s filing also highlights questions surrounding the use of a single campaign committee—“Friends of Steve Doyle”—for both state assembly and county board activities. The complaint requests clarification on how contributions are allocated between campaigns and whether applicable limits are being properly enforced.

“Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining trust in our local elections,” Chris Muller said . “When voters see potential inconsistencies in campaign finance reporting, they deserve clear answers and equal enforcement of the rules.”

The formal complaint requests that the County Clerk review the contributions in question and provide guidance on compliance standards when a candidate operates multiple campaigns under a single committee.

Muller emphasized that the request is not about politics, but about ensuring fairness and consistency in the electoral process.

“These rules exist to create a level playing field for all candidates,” Muller added. “It’s important that they are applied uniformly so voters can have confidence in the integrity of our elections.”

———- LETTER TO LA CROSSE COUNTY CLERK ———-

Subject: Request for Review of Potential Campaign Finance Violations

Dear La Crosse County Clerk,

I am writing to formally request a review of potential campaign finance compliance issues related to contributions received by Steve Doyle.

Based on my understanding of guidance provided by your office, candidates for county board seats are subject to a contribution limit of $500 per individual per calendar year. However, according to the most recent campaign finance report filed by Mr. Doyle (linked below), there appear to be multiple contributions in the amount of $1,000 from individual donors within the same reporting period.

For reference:
https://lacrossecounty.org/docs/default-source/county-clerk/campaign-finance/spring-2026/SD033026.pdf

It is my understanding that Mr. Doyle operates both his state assembly and county board campaign activities under the same committee, “Friends of Steve Doyle.” This raises concerns regarding the proper allocation and reporting of contributions between the two campaigns, as well as whether contributions exceeding county limits may be attributed to the correct office.

Given this structure, I respectfully request clarification on the following:

  1. How contributions are distinguished and reported when a single committee is used for multiple offices.
  2. What safeguards are in place to ensure compliance with contribution limits specific to county-level races.
  3. Whether the contributions in question have been reviewed for compliance with applicable campaign finance laws.

Ensuring transparency and consistency in the application of campaign finance rules is critical to maintaining public trust in our local elections. I appreciate your time and attention to this matter and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
Chris Muller
