Madison – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 373, authored by Representative Lindee Brill (R-Sheboygan Falls), into law. AB 373 provides a $2,000 tax credit to parents of a stillborn child. Representative Brill offered the following comment:

“On average, 323 Wisconsin babies are lost to stillbirth every year. Each and every one of those deaths represents a family wounded by bereavement, suffering through the trauma of losing their child with all the financial burdens associated with a birth, but none of the State support.

“Assembly Bill 373, now Act 241, seeks to remedy this injustice, alleviate this hardship, and assist healing families by providing a $2,000 tax credit to parents suffering the loss of a child through stillbirth. While this in no way removes the pain of such a traumatic bereavement, it will help reduce the financial burden that magnifies that pain. Act 241 is a vital, bipartisan piece of legislation that will make a real difference in the lives of Wisconsin families suffering the loss of a child through stillbirth. I want to extend my profound thanks to the legislators who proposed this legislation in previous sessions, and my gratitude to my colleagues for their support. In honor of Johnathan, Lily, Alana Rose Whitmore, Harriet and Greta Nielsen, Olivia Grace, Nora, and countless other children whose lives have been lost through stillbirth, I am humbled by the opportunity to have authored this deeply meaningful bill alongside Senator Jacque (R-New Franken).”
