The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance (WMCA) applauds the Milwaukee Common Council for passing a resolution calling for the immediate release of Salah Sarsour and affirming his right to due process under the Constitution.

The resolution passed with a decisive vote of 12-0, with 3 members not present, reflecting strong and unified support from the Council. This action represents a clear and principled stand by the City of Milwaukee in defense of civil liberties, fairness, and the protection of its residents.

Salah Sarsour is a respected community leader, a lawful permanent resident of over three decades, and a deeply rooted member of the Milwaukee community. His detention has raised serious concerns about due process, constitutional protections, and the potential misuse of immigration enforcement in ways that impact communities based on identity or advocacy.

“We are grateful to the Milwaukee Common Council for taking this important and timely step,” said Fauzia Qureshi, Executive Director of WMCA. “A unanimous vote of those present sends a powerful message that Milwaukee stands firmly for justice, due process, and the dignity of all people. Our community has been watching closely, and this action matters.”

WMCA extends special recognition to Alderman Alex Brower for his leadership in introducing this resolution and moving it forward with urgency, as well as to members of the Common Council who supported its passage.

This outcome reflects the collective efforts of community members, advocates, faith leaders, and allies who raised their voices, engaged their elected officials, and demanded action. It is a testament to the strength and unity of Milwaukee’s communities.

While the passage of this resolution is a meaningful and important step, the situation remains urgent. WMCA continues to call for the immediate release of Salah Sarsour and for the full protection of his constitutional rights, including due process.

Milwaukee has made its position clear. We now urge federal authorities to act accordingly and ensure that justice is upheld.

WMCA remains committed to advocating for the dignity, safety, and rights of Muslim communities, our allies, and all communities impacted by unjust policies or actions.
