More than 10,000 veterans have lost their homes so billionaires could get tax breaks
EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. – Today, Rebecca Cooke called out Derrick Van Orden, House Veterans’ Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee Chairman, for pushing to end the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) Program – the main tool the federal government has to protect veterans from foreclosure and celebrating as it resulted in the eviction of 10,000 veterans.
“Derrick Van Orden celebrated when the VA cancelled the VASP program — the lifeline keeping veterans in their homes,” said Rebecca Cooke. “He called it a win. Here’s what it actually means: over 10,000 veterans have already lost their homes to foreclosure. 90,000 more are behind on their mortgages with no safety net in sight. All to cut taxes for the super wealthy, people with multiple homes. These are people who served our country, earned this benefit, and are now watching their homes disappear — while their Congressman cheered it on.”
“I come from a family of veterans,” Cooke continued. “My grandfather, my father, and my brother all served. This is not what we owe the people who sacrificed everything for us.”
REMINDER: Veterans and veterans’ housing advocates warned of the foreclosures to come as Van Orden fought to end the VASP program – but that didn’t stop him.
