MADISON, Wis. — While Derrick Van Orden shamelessly tries to take a victory lap over the House passage of the Farm Bill, thousands of working-class Wisconsin families now face increased economic hardships in the wake of another Van Orden vote that favors large corporations at the expense of Wisconsinites. To add insult to injury, this devastating bill reinforces OBBB cuts to SNAP — cuts Van Orden repeatedly called a “lie” and promised Wisconsin families would never happen — and those cuts have already stripped benefits from 3 million Americans, including 15,500 Wisconsinites.
Van Orden rubber-stamped a bill that leaves behind family farms in favor of large corporate operations and forces working people to face losing food benefits. The bill is also another example of Van Orden’s willingness to bend the knee to the Trump administration’s reckless federal overreach by rejecting states’ rights to set standards around consumer and animal welfare protections.
“Derrick Van Orden and House Republicans took nearly two years to pass a farm bill, and the one they landed on crushes working-class Wisconsinites already stretched thin by Trump’s illegal tariff war and war with Iran,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Rachel La Due. “Van Orden had a choice to stand up for Wisconsin’s small family farmers and working families but has once again chosen the Trump administration and corporate billionaires over his constituents in the third congressional district.”Despite Van Orden’s best efforts, House Democrats passed an amendment to prevent Republicans’ attempt to strip consumers of their right to sue pesticide companies for harm caused by their chemicals. Van Orden voted against the amendment, further proving his loyalty to big corporations over small family farms.
