Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize my mom Wendy and all the moms across the state.

This session, the senate worked to increase access to affordable healthcare for new moms.

Until recently, Wisconsin limited coverage for new moms on Medicaid to 60 days postpartum. That means that as women were dealing with the physical and emotional toll of childbirth, they were faced with losing their healthcare coverage and having to find a new doctor.

Complications like postpartum depression, hypertension, infection, and diabetes frequently appear months after a baby is born. The extension in postpartum care will allow for early detection and intervention, avoid costly emergency room visits, and – crucially – align coverage for mothers with existing coverage for their babies.

Providing that continuity and peace of mind will keep moms and babies healthier, and save the state and providers money by limiting the need for emergency room care.

This is State Senator Eric Wimberger, wishing moms across Wisconsin a happy Mother’s Day.
