Racine, WI – State Representative and Racine Educators United (REU) President Angelina Cruz is encouraging Racine families, educators, students, and community members to attend the DEFEND Public Education project gallery event on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Memorial Hall.

The free public event brings together art, storytelling, and community advocacy to celebrate Racine educators and students while highlighting the urgent need for sustainable investment in public education and property tax relief for Wisconsin families.

THE PASSIONS PROJECT | Racial & Social Justice Racine is a collaboration between photographer and creator of THE PASSIONS PROJECT Heidi Wagner, the National Education Association (NEA), the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), and Racine Educators United. This year’s exhibition features portraits of Racine educators and students that reflect the strength, creativity, and diversity of the community’s public schools.

“This event is about more than art – it’s about protecting public education and investing in our communities,” said Rep. Angelina Cruz. “Over the past several weeks, I’ve been meeting with families, educators, school leaders, and taxpayers across Wisconsin who are all raising the same concern: our state’s failure to adequately fund public schools is driving repeated referendums and increasing pressure on local property taxes.”

Cruz recently participated in education funding conversations in Racine and communities across the state focused on the need for long-term school funding solutions, including support for Assembly Bill 1176, legislation designed to increase the state’s investment in public education, strengthen special education funding, and reduce the reliance on local property taxes to fund schools.

“Wisconsin families should not be forced to choose between strong public schools and affordable property taxes,” Cruz said. “This event is an opportunity to celebrate the people who make our schools strong while also building momentum for sustainable state investment in public education.”

Artist Heidi Wagner said the project is intended to elevate the voices and experiences of students and educators whose stories are often overlooked.

“When people see the humanity, creativity, and dedication inside our public schools, it becomes impossible to ignore what’s at stake,” Wagner said. “This project is about connection, visibility, and action.”

Community members are encouraged to attend and participate in ongoing efforts to advocate for equitable public school funding across Wisconsin.
