[Madison, WI] Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate have finalized a deal with Governor Evers to address the state’s $2.4 billion budget surplus. State Representative Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) released the following statement:

“After months of negotiations, I am happy to announce that my colleagues and I have reached a bipartisan agreement with Governor Evers to address Wisconsin’s budget surplus. This is money that was taken from the
people of Wisconsin, who have been overtaxed, and it never should have left their wallets. I am especially
proud that our deal includes substantial property tax relief and no tax on tips and overtime. Affordability is the
number one issue that I hear about from folks in my district and somehow our state was sitting on billions of
dollars in surplus funds. For me, the solution to these problems was obvious: return the taxpayers’ money, and
that’s exactly what this deal accomplishes.”

The agreement includes $862 million in direct support for Wisconsinites, providing $300 income tax refunds for
individuals and $600 for married couples filing jointly. Other allocations include $300 million for general
school aid, an additional $300 million for special education, and $50 million in technical college property tax
relief. Aid will count toward school districts’ revenue limit and reduce their operational levy, reducing local
property taxes by an equal amount. Wisconsin will also eliminate state income taxes on tips and overtime,
proposals that were previously vetoed by Governor Evers.

“A lot of time and effort went into this; I am incredibly pleased that families in the 35th will finally receive
much-needed economic relief. This deal provides well over a billion dollars in tax relief, in addition to the
significant tax relief created by eliminating taxes on tips and overtime. This is a major win for friends and
neighbors of the 35th Assembly District who have struggled to keep up with rising costs. This agreement is a
sign of hope that both parties can come together to do what’s right for the people of Wisconsin.”
