MADISON, Wis. — On Thursday night, Derrick Van Orden criticized constituents protesting healthcare cuts outside a private event he was attending, saying “I just wish they knew what they were talking about. There has been no cuts to Medicaid or Medicare. There’s not going to be cuts to Medicaid and Medicare.” These comments come after Van Orden cheered on the $1 trillion Medicaid cut the OBBB made last July — a cut he was instrumental in passing — that put over 32,000 of his constituents at risk of losing their healthcare.
While Van Orden has been trying to bury the healthcare cuts he helped pass, he also spent this weekend calling for an escalation of the war with Iran, an illegal war that has already led to record high diesel prices in Wisconsin. This has only worsened the cost crisis the GOP created with their cuts to healthcare and SNAP in favor of tax breaks for billionaires.
“Derrick Van Orden has shown that he is completely ignorant of the issues the people in Wisconsin’s 3rd congressional district face,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Rachel La Due. “While his constituents spend their weekends worrying about how to budget for the following week of gas, groceries, and child care, Van Orden sends out unhinged tweet threats and continues to put the interests of billionaires over working class Wisconsinites.”
