MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly will pass a $1.8 billion dollar spending deal negotiated between Governor Tony Evers, Speaker Robin Vos, and Senate Majority Leader Devin Lemahieu, all of whom are in the final days before retiring from office. The bill is expected to pass with primarily Republican support. Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison), who will vote no on the proposal, released the following statement:

“This reckless and fiscally irresponsible deal was negotiated behind closed doors by three lame duck leaders who will all be long gone by the time anyone will see the consequences. That’s not how government should work, and that’s why I’m voting no.

We could have spent the past year and a half focused on making life in Wisconsin more affordable for working families. Instead, Republicans spent it fueling culture wars and carrying out the MAGA agenda. Instead of helping families afford groceries by ensuring access to free school meals, Republicans focused on making life harder for our LGBTQ neighbors. Instead of tackling the rising cost of health care, they pushed to limit our access to reproductive health care and limit our reproductive freedom.

Thanks to Donald Trump and the Republicans’ so-called Big Beautiful Bill, our state and its residents face major economic challenges going forward. Now, heading into an election in which Republicans have to contend with an affordability crisis of their own making, they think they can buy votes with empty promises of rebate checks which won’t even cover a week of grocery bills for most families.”

Rep. Subeck represents the 79th Assembly District, and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
