MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites the public to develop their outdoor recreation skills and build confidence in nature at the Explore the Outdoors Expo. The open house-style event will showcase some of the state’s most popular outdoor activities. The Explore the Outdoors Expo will be held rain or shine at Havenwoods State Forest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 16, 2026. Visitors can drop by the property any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to join the fun.

Featured activities include camping, hiking, climbing, hunting, fishing, kayaking and birding. Industry experts will provide an overview of these activities, including equipment needs and safety precautions, with opportunity for hands-on demonstrations. This is an introductory-level event, and no experience is required to attend.

“If you like to go for walks when it’s nice out, or ride your bike around the neighborhood, chances are you would enjoy doing these activities at one of our state parks or forests too,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Bureau of Parks and Recreation Management director. “Come out for this event to try something new; DNR staff and partners are here to help you have a safe and fun experience, even if you’re visiting for the first time.”

During the Explore the Outdoors Expo, attendees are invited to sign up for expert-led introductory guided experiences offered later in the year. The activities will be held within one hour of the Milwaukee area, at low or no cost to those signing up. All necessary equipment will be provided for the guided experience events.

Funding for the Explore the Outdoors Expo was generously provided by the Bronco Wild Fund and the National Association of State Park Directors’ America’s State Parks Foundation.
