This week, we saw the worst of Madison politics.
The state government currently has a $2.5 billion surplus. That’s $2.5 billion of your money sitting in a Madison bank account as rising costs impact your family budget. So, we crafted a bipartisan plan to return the surplus to taxpayers.
On Wednesday night, that plan failed because Senate Democrats opposed governor Evers and voted to stop $600 rebate checks, no tax on tips and overtime, and property tax relief. They even rejected more than $600 million for Wisconsin schools – including $315 million in new special education funding.
Since I took office, my top priority has been to do the right thing for you and your family. This proposal would have put more money in your pocket to help you with rising costs.
But unfortunately, too many elected officials put politics over people and denied this much needed relief to working families and schools.
