MADISON – On May 13th, both houses of the Wisconsin State Legislature voted on a $1.8 billion deal to fund public education, decrease property taxes, and eliminate taxes on overtime and tips. This deal was a bipartisan compromise spearheaded by Governor Evers, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu. The package planned to use the surplus funds to invest $600 million into special education and general aid funding for K-12 education, as well as $50 million for the Wisconsin Technical College System. It also planned to eliminate the income tax on cash tips and overtime pay. The bill passed in the Assembly on a 61-32 vote and failed in the Senate on a 15-18 vote. Representative Joe Sheehan (D-Sheboygan) released the following statement:
“As you know I will always fight for education funding and special education funding, which is why I voted yes for this bill.”
