FOND DU LAC, WI – Yesterday, Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney submitted the maximum number of nomination signatures allowed for ballot access in the 2026 Wisconsin Attorney General race.
“I’m grateful to every Wisconsinite who signed my nomination papers. We are taking the next step toward restoring conservative, common-sense leadership to the Department of Justice – and toward an Attorney General’s office that works for victims, law enforcement, and every family in all 72 counties,” said Eric Toney. “It’s time for Josh Kaul’s broken promise politics to end. Under Kaul’s watch, crime labs are slower. Northern Wisconsin has zero narcotics investigative agents, which is unnecessary costing lives. Public records requests take years. Victims continue to take a back seat as Kaul puts his politics over public safety. That is not acceptable, and Wisconsinites know it. On day one I’ll ensure we’re always putting public safety over politics.”
The 2026 race is a rematch of 2022, when Toney came within a narrow margin of defeating Kaul despite Kaul outspending Toney by nearly 5-to-1. In the most recent reporting period, Toney outraised incumbent Josh Kaul – posting $446,000, the largest first-period haul by a non-incumbent Wisconsin Attorney General candidate in history.
Toney is in his 14th year as a District Attorney and past president of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association. He was the 2024 Wisconsin District Attorney of the Year and received an Unsung Hero award from the Wisconsin Law Journal for his bipartisan budget work that delivered significant public safety resources across Wisconsin. He has been endorsed by 44 current and former sheriffs across Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Police Association – representing more than 1,200 Milwaukee officers.
