Washington, D.C. – Throughout the month of June, Protect Our Care is blasting Republicans for their health care crisis ahead of the one-year anniversary of their big, ugly bill on July 4th. Last summer, Donald Trump and Republicans made the largest cuts to health care in history, slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations.

Nearly 15 million Americans are set to lose coverage, while nearly 3.5 million have already lost life-saving coverage. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs have skyrocketed while insurance companies have pulled out of markets, reducing choices and leaving families scrambling to find affordable coverage. Rural hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers have been pushed to the brink, with many cutting services or shutting their doors entirely.

To mark the start of the countdown, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse released the following statement:

“One year ago, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans were jamming through the largest cuts to health care in American history despite overwhelming opposition from working families across the country. They gutted Medicaid and slashed the Affordable Care Act to hand billionaires and big corporations another massive tax break, even as experts warned the consequences would be catastrophic. Nearly a year later, those warnings have become reality. Millions of Americans have already lost coverage or are at risk of losing it, costs are skyrocketing, hospitals and clinics are shutting down, and families are struggling to get the care they need. Republicans created this crisis, they own every consequence, and we will make sure voters remember every lawmaker who voted for this devastation.”

Throughout June, Protect Our Care will take this fight directly to the American people, exposing the truth Republicans are trying to hide and holding them accountable for the damage they’ve done. This month will include:

  • National events targeting Republicans who voted for these cuts and are now dodging accountability
  • In-state events in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin
  • Storytelling campaigns elevating the voices of working families being pushed off care in press events, creator bookings, and digital ads
  • New reports and state-by-state fact sheets

The month features the following theme weeks:

  • June 1 – 5: Caregivers Getting Crushed Under GOP Cuts
  • June 8 – 12: The Health Care Affordability Crisis
  • June 15 – 19: Hospitals In Crisis
