U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore called for party unity going into this year’s midterms, telling Wisconsin Dem activists the only thing that could beat them this November were Democrats themselves.

Riffing on a magic trick performed by U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Town of Vermont, the Milwaukee Dem listed three “magic numbers” – 270, the number of electoral votes to win a presidential election; 218, the seats needed for a House majority; and 51, the seats needed to control the U.S. Senate.

With 218 seats, Moore said, Dems could “crown Hakeem Jeffries” the speaker of the House.

Moore told attendees that diversity was both the party’s strength and weakness.

“I don’t have to tell ya’ll what’s going on in the Democratic Party right now, where Republicans are just delighted that they have been able to help build those divisions,” Moore said.

Both Moore and her fellow Democrat in the House, Mark Pocan, face primary challengers this summer. Amy Donahue, endorsed by Wisconsin Electoral Socialists, has qualified for the Democratic primary in August against Moore, a 10-term incumbent.

“We do not have the luxury to tell people to sit out elections or vote third party or feel some kind of way,” Moore said.
