The organization is advocating for the 2026 city budget to include funding for three key initiatives aimed at improving housing conditions and empowering renters across Madison:
- A public registry of building code violations
- Tenant education on building inspections and rent abatement rights
- Anonymous and incentivized reporting for tenants least likely to report unsafe housing conditions, including low-income families
According to Madison Tenant Power, many renters face unsafe or neglected living conditions but hesitate to report violations out of fear of retaliation, language barriers, or lack of knowledge about their rights.
The proposed reporting incentive program comes from the proposed Madison Tenant Bill of Rights and would include measures such as monetary rewards for verified reports, options for anonymous complaints, relocation assistance, and public recognition tied to responsible property management practices.
A publicly accessible building code violation registry would help renters make informed housing decisions while increasing transparency around repeat offenders. Tenant education programs could help residents better understand inspection, rent abatement, and how to document unsafe living conditions.
Madison Tenant Power is encouraging tenants and housing advocates to attend the June 24th budget meeting and voice support for increased investment in tenant protections.
