WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Derrick Van Orden released the following statement regarding today’s Supreme Court ruling on Birthright Citizenship:
“The Fourteenth Amendment was enacted in the aftermath of Dred Scott to guarantee citizenship for freed slaves, not to establish automatic citizenship for individuals who are unlawfully present in the United States or only temporarily here. This ruling departs from that historical context and the original understanding.
By adopting this interpretation, the Court risks further incentivizing abuse of the immigration system and undermining the integrity of American citizenship. These are serious consequences with long-term implications for the rule of law and border security.
Congress should act promptly to ensure the Citizenship Clause is applied consistent with its original meaning and protect the integrity of American citizenship.”
