DVO’S DADDY OF THE WEEK: Marco RubioWe’ll be honest—Van Orden’s glazing has been a little light lately (maybe he’s a frequent reader and has finally clocked how unbecoming this is for a sitting congressman), but the glaze never actually hits zero. This week, Van Orden tweeted his review of Marco Rubio’s tenure as Secretary of State, giving Rubio an 11 out of 10. Effective immediately, Rubio’s new title is Derrick Van Orden’s Daddy of the Week. Honestly, there’s not much more to say here beyond what we say every week. If this were just some random guy replying to a tweet, it’d be no big deal. But this is a Congressman—one with a track record of putting Trump administration officials above his own constituents. So as long as he keeps praising this administration and the officials that manufacture its cost-raising agenda, we’re going to keep making fun of him for it.THIS IS SO WEIRD!! We feel like we can let this post speak for itself. Calling people turds and cracking distasteful jokes about sexual assault victims is just nasty work from a sitting Congressman—the kind of “humor” that should end careers, not get retweets. But honestly, we shouldn’t be surprised by this behavior from Van Orden. This is a guy who is constantly begging for attention from Jeffrey Epstein’s bestie, so maybe the bar was never that high to begin with. WORST TAKE: Religious Freedom has an asteriskVan Orden has given us one of his worst takes yet. When a piece highlighting how America was founded on religious freedom (re: the literal First Amendment) hit Van Orden’s timeline, his response was to tell the author to move to Afghanistan.WHAT? Listen, this Whine Wednesday author is no expert in constitutional law, but we’re pretty sure a third grader could call out Van Orden’s BS here. The First Amendment—the one he’s apparently so passionate about—literally enshrines the right to religious freedom. This is part of a larger, documented pattern in Van Orden’s online history of isolating and demonizing Muslim Americans. Telling someone to leave the country over religious freedom isn’t a joke—it’s dangerous rhetoric disguised as one, pushing a discriminatory agenda. Earlier this month, Van Orden was formally condemned by the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance following reporting on his anti-Muslim history. A sitting Congressman shouldn’t need a reminder that Muslim Americans are Americans—but here we are. Editor’s Note: Thanks for tuning in to Whine Wednesday this week.
