Ashland, Wis – A new coalition, Northwoods United, has launched with the goal of having local residents pledge to be respectful and peaceful when it comes to conversations and actions around the Line 5 relocation project that recently began construction in Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties. Among other items, the group’s pledge calls for the condemnation of violence and vandalism in any demonstrations either for or against the project.
Northwoods United is not advocating for or against the Line 5 relocation. Instead, the group is focused on uniting the region around a set of principles, which is outlined in their pledge. The pledge reads:
“I support and respect free speech for all. I support respectful discussions and oppose the use of racist or hateful speech. I support respecting and honoring Native American cultures. I condemn the use of violence, vandalism, trespassing and intimidation. I will show respect for everyone – including workers, local business owners, area farmers, and tribal members – even those I disagree with. I oppose individuals and groups coming into our community to express their views in a violent or intimidating manner. While we may have many views, I pledge to keep the Northwoods United through peaceful and respectful discussion.”
