Milwaukee County Exec David Crowley will re-enter the governor’s race tomorrow a little more than a week after dropping his bid because he no longer believed he had a path to the Dem nomination, according to a source with knowledge of his plans.

The source said Crowley was expected to announce the endorsement of Dem Gov. Tony Evers, who had repeatedly said he planned to remain neutral in the race.

But Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez has dropped out of the race amid financial irregularities with her campaign, and state Rep. Francesca Hong, D-Madison, has led private polling.

As word spread today that Crowley was considering getting back into the race with Evers’ backing, multiple Dem sources cast it as a last-ditch moderate effort to prevent Hong from winning the Dem nomination.

Along with Hong, former DOA Secretary Joel Brennan, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and state Sen. Kelda Roys, of Madison, also remained in the race.

Crowley this afternoon released an advisory for a “special announcement concerning the Wisconsin Democratic primary race.”
