An ad from the Republican Governors Association’s Right Direction Wisconsin that says gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, a Dem lawmaker from Madison, opposes President Donald Trump’s immigration policy and is the only candidate who would take the Dem Party back to its progressive roots.
While critical of Hong on public safety, the buy is focused on broadcast TV in Madison and Milwaukee, the two markets that factor heavily into turnout in Dem primaries. Insiders took the anti-ICE message as a sign the ad was at least partly meant to boost Hong in the Dem primary.
Dem sources shared the new RGA ad with WisPolitics. It opens with a clip of Hong on the Twitch stream of Hasan Piker saying: the “We are the campaign that will actually go back to our progressive roots.”
The narrator then says Hong opposes Trump’s deportation policies, wants to abolish ICE and supports banning Wisconsin law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials.

“That will weaken public safety and make us less safe,” the narrator says.
The spot again plays the clip of Hong saying she’s taking the party back to its progressive roots before the narrator closes the ad saying Hong is “too liberal for Wisconsin.”
