The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin believes government accountability is fundamental to protecting individual liberty. When government agents are entrusted with the authority to use deadly force, transparency should already be in place, not promised after another controversial incident.

The recent fatal police shooting in Madison has once again highlighted the city’s failure to implement department-wide body cameras. Instead of providing objective evidence, investigators and the public are left relying on bystander video and eyewitness accounts.

People have every right to demand better.

Madison has debated body cameras for years. A limited pilot program did not begin until 2024, long after body cameras became common across Wisconsin and the nation. Now, city leaders are proposing to include funding in the next budget rather than treating this as an immediate priority.

Every delay means another encounter could occur without the transparency the public deserves.

Body cameras are not about taking sides. They protect individual rights by documenting interactions between government officials and the public. They help hold government accountable, protect officers from false accusations, and provide the best available evidence when force is used.

Public frustration should not be dismissed. When government delays basic accountability measures year after year, it should not be a surprise when public confidence erodes. The solution is not to ask citizens for more patience,it is to provide greater transparency.

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin calls on Madison officials to prioritize implementation of a comprehensive body camera program as quickly as practicable, with strong privacy protections, clear evidence preservation standards, and public release policies consistent with Wisconsin law and due process.

Government earns trust through accountability, not promises of future action. Madison has had years to prepare. The people of Wisconsin deserve transparency now,not after the next budget cycle.
