MADISON, WI. — Senator Wall will serve on a new 13-member study committee reviewing Wisconsin’s funding formula for district attorneys’ offices. The committee will meet for the first time today.
The committee will review the state’s weighted caseload formula, which helps determine staff allocations for district attorney offices. Members will consider whether the formula accurately reflects the workload of these offices and whether changes are needed.
Study committees meet while the Legislature is out of session, bringing legislators and citizens together to examine issues and develop potential solutions. The committee will make recommendations to the Joint Legislative Council following its review.
The committee’s work comes as Brown County and other counties face growing criminal case backlogs.

In Brown County, pending felony cases increased from 891 in 2014 to 2,858 in 2024, a 220 percent increase. During that same period, felony cases more than two years old increased from eight to 512, a 6,300 percent increase.
Senator Wall released the following statement in response:
“Brown County has seen a significant rise in criminal cases over the past decade. I look forward to learning more about the demands on district attorney offices. Our funding formula should reflect their workload and ensure cases move forward in a timely manner,” said Senator Wall.
