Traffic safety partners convened this week at the Governor’s Conference on Highway Safety in Wisconsin Dells, an annual event hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and its Division of State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety and Technology Services. The event theme, Zero in Wisconsin, focuses on implementing and improving community and statewide efforts to achieve zero preventable fatalities on Wisconsin roads.
“Every fatality is not just a number– it’s a life lost and family forever changed,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “Alongside our partners, we share a mission to provide leadership in the development and operation of a safe and efficient transportation system in Wisconsin to prevent these tragedies. This conference provides an opportunity to work together to identify and implement solutions that make a difference in Wisconsin communities.”
Keynote speakers focused on inspiring change, building a safer system and moving the state toward zero preventable deaths on Wisconsin roads. Educational sessions highlighted the latest technologies and best practices to protect road users, including law enforcement strategies, crash response, engineering solutions and data analysis.
For more than 50 years, WisDOT has hosted the Governor’s Conference on Highway Safety to provide a platform for local, state, Tribal and federal traffic safety partners to work together to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system across Wisconsin. The event centers around implementing a Safe System— safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles, safer people and strong post-crash care– designed around the reality that people make mistakes and that those mistakes should not cost someone their life.

“Until we reach zero preventable fatalities on Wisconsin roads, we still have work to do,” Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said. “The Governor’s Conference on Highway Safety provides an opportunity to learn from and support one another in efforts to improve safety on Wisconsin roads. Enforcement alone will not solve every traffic safety challenge. We have to work together to build a culture where safe driving is the expectation.”
