RACINE, Wis. — Today, Senator Tammy Baldwin endorsed Mitchell Berman in the race for Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. Senator Baldwin joins a growing coalition of labor unions, elected officials, and local leaders backing Berman as he works to flip WI-01 and unseat four-term incumbent Bryan Steil. WI-01 is one of the most competitive districts in the country.

Senator Baldwin issued the following statement:

“I am proud to endorse Mitchell Berman for Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. We need more people in Washington who have real life experience and know what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet and face real challenges in life. Mitchell grew up working class, worked at the VA taking care of our veterans, and still fights for his patients at the bedside as an ER nurse — we can count on him to fight for Wisconsin in Congress.”

Senator Baldwin has been a champion of lowering healthcare costs for Wisconsin families and fighting to make sure that Veterans get the care they deserve. She has fought to give Medicare the power to negotiate prescription drug prices, cap insulin at $35 a month, and cap seniors’ out-of-pocket drug costs — issues Mitchell has seen firsthand at the bedside – and all important goals that Rep. Bryan Steil opposed. She has also worked across the aisle to strengthen the VA, from opioid safety reforms to funding the staffing and care veterans were promised.

Her backing comes at a pivotal moment in the race, with recent polling showing Berman and Steil neck-and-neck and Berman launching his first campaign ad of the general election earlier this week.

Mitchell Berman was raised in a one-stoplight town in rural Wisconsin. His father built a small roofing business from the ground up and his mother worked long hours grinding pistons at the local foundry. Mitchell was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning his degree while working three jobs, living paycheck to paycheck, and taking out student loans. With more than 23 years of experience in healthcare, Mitchell is a registered nurse and spent over a decade serving veterans, active duty servicemembers, and their families at the VA. He continues to serve as a board-certified emergency nurse today.
