— The state Supreme Court today declined to immediately suspend the law license of former Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan following her felony conviction of impeding federal immigration officers.
The Office of Lawyer Regulation in July sought to summarily suspend Dugan’s license without first holding a hearing on the issue after she was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine for her conviction on federal charges. In doing so, the agency cited rules that allow a lawyer’s license to be suspended upon conviction of a “serious crime.”
In today’s order, the court didn’t explain its rationale, writing only that it exercised its discretion under judicial codes.

Conservative Justices Brian Hagedorn and Annette Ziegler dissented.
Ziegler wrote she was “confounded by our court’s inaction. But that inaction does not dictate that the OLR must wait to proceed.”
The Office of Lawyer Regulation can still seek to have Dugan’s license suspended through the full process.
