Heavy vehicles join cars and light trucks for Fleet license plates, included in online management process

Beginning October 1 when a new Wisconsin law takes effect, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) expands the Fleet license plate option to businesses and organizations that have heavy vehicles.

Last year, more than 12,000 automobiles and light trucks carried the Fleet plate. By expanding the legal requirement to include these “heavy” vehicles, more businesses can conveniently manage their entire fleet online. To receive these plates, businesses enroll in DMV’s eMV Fleet (wisconsindmv.gov/emvfleet), the convenient, online fleet management portal.

“Wisconsin DMV is proud to continue to expand our eMV Fleet services and deliver to businesses a modern, simplified process to register and renew fleet cars, light trucks and heavies in Wisconsin,” Wisconsin DMV Bureau of Vehicle Services Director David Albino said. “By participating in eMV Fleet they can reduce paperwork, save time and keep their fleet vehicles compliant.”

Once enrolled, Wisconsin businesses and organizations can manage all their vehicles through a centralized online dashboard. Customers can register and renew vehicles, order replacement fleet plates (within a renewal), receive renewal notifications electronically, pre-order and keep registration and EV stickers on hand, update the vehicle county and local municipality kept-in information, self-certify their non-operation period and renew a vehicle for multiple quarters or months.

Currently automobiles and light trucks with a gross weight of 8,000 pounds or less are eligible for Fleet plates. Effective October 1, non-individuals, such as businesses or organizations, with 10 or more vehicles may be eligible for a Wisconsin Fleet plate, including these heavy trucks, tractors and/or trailers:

  • Trucks with gross weight between 8,001 and 54,000 pounds
  • Truck tractors and road tractors with a gross weight up to 54,000 pounds
  • Trailers with a gross weight up to 80,000 pounds
