MADISON, WI — The Department of Corrections (DOC) realignment project, initially estimated at $325 million in Governor Tony Evers’ 2025–27 Executive Budget, is now projected to cost approximately $585 million.
The increase is partially due to inflation and rising construction costs.
“While the realignment project remains less expensive than building a new prison, I’m disappointed that legislative inaction has driven up the costs of this much-needed reform,” said Senator Wall.
“Taxpayers will pay the price for this delay. We need to move forward with this project to ensure public safety and avoid still-higher costs.”
The DOC realignment project includes upgrades to existing correctional facilities across Wisconsin and will allow for the eventual closure of the Green Bay Correctional Institution.
