Janesville, WI — ER nurse Mitchell Berman decisively won today’s WCLO debate against incumbent Republican Bryan Steil in Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. Berman focused on lowering everyday costs for the district while holding Steil accountable for his record that’s driving up prices.

Berman drew a stark contrast between his working class background and campaign to fight for Wisconsin families, versus Steil’s corporate-funded career spent rubber-stamping Trump’s disastrous economic agenda.

During the debate, Berman:

  • Hammered Steil’s record of siding with corporate donors over his constituents. Berman highlighted Steil’s vote to strip health coverage from 270,000 Wisconsinites. Steil voted against capping insulin at $35 the same day he took cash from a drug industry lobbyist, and voted to cut rental assistance for 600,000 families after taking $33,700 from Blackstone’s CEO and employees.
  • Detailed his plan to lower costs for working families. Berman will fight to lower the cost of child care, cap out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, and help first-time homebuyers with down payment assistance.
  • Called out Steil’s support for Trump’s tariffs that have raised prices on Wisconsin families and hammered local farmers and manufacturers. Steil voted again and again to keep the tariffs in place, even after his own constituents booed him for defending them.

There is a clear contrast in this race. Mitchell Berman is an ER nurse and father of two who has spent nearly 20 years caring for patients, including more than a decade serving veterans at the VA. He brings a plan to lower costs, fix health care, and make Congress work for working people again.

Bryan Steil brings a record of gutting health care, raising costs with tariffs, and cashing in on his time in Washington while his corporate donors get richer.
