WKBT: Josh Kaul Discusses Tariffs, Farmers’ Right to Repair

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul met with voters in Westby Tuesday morning to discuss President Donald Trump’s tariffs and farmers’ right to repair.
Kaul was joined by state Sen. Brad Pfaff and the president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union.
“The Wisconsin Department of Justice is the lawyer for the people of the state, and fighting to protect Wisconsinites when there are laws that are being violated that maybe increase prices or deny people access to repair their technology,” Kaul said.
Kaul is running against Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney.
WIZM: Wisconsin AG Kaul Talks Farm Issues Just Before Election at Westby Area Farm

Wisconsin’s attorney general makes a campaign stop near Westby.
Incumbent Democrat Josh Kaul says tariffs on farm supplies and equipment are causing financial problems for farmers around the state.
Kaul also is speaking in favor of “right to repair” bills, fighting corporate practices that make it difficult for farmers to get repairs for their equipment, noting that area Senator Brad Pfaff has sponsored such a bill. “It hasn’t made progress with the Republican-led Senate, for example,” Kaul told reporters gathered at the Darin Von Ruden farm near Westby. “Who the governor is may impact whether something like that gets signed.”
Von Ruden says equipment makers and dealers follow procedures that drive up the cost of using tractors. “If you don’t have the knowledge on how to fix it, or you don’t have that right to fix it,” somebody might have to wait hours for a repair person to do the job, he says.
Pfaff says the attorney general has the power to insure that consumers are protected. He also has concerns about the price of diesel fuel used by farmers.
“Diesel fuel’s over six dollars a gallon right now,” says Pfaff. “If you’re gonna harvest grains, you need to have diesel fuel within your combine.” He also notes that semis transporting farm goods are using diesel.
Kaul says there’s more work for the government to do, to keep many farm-related prices from increasing.
WXOW: Wisconsin AG Kaul Visits Farm to Discuss Right to Repair Legislation and Tariffs
By: Lauryn Schieffer | 10/20/2026
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul made a campaign stop at a farm in Westby on Tuesday, discussing farmers’ right to repair legislation and the impact of federal tariffs.
Kaul was joined by State Sen. Brad Pfaff and Westby farmer Darin Von Ruden. The proposed protection bill would allow farmers and independent mechanics to repair agricultural machinery without relying solely on manufacturer-authorized dealerships.
Kaul also addressed how the current administration’s tariffs are affecting farmers and how he is working to tackle the federal trade policy at the state level.
“We’ve had a number of cases against this administration. Some areas we’ve had a lot of success,” Kaul said. “That’s happened a lot where the Trump administration has tried to illegally condition or cut or freeze funding.”
“In the meantime, our hope is that we’ll get resolution in the courts and that they’ll block the current Trump administration tariffs,” he said.
Kaul heads to Madison for another campaign stop, this time focusing on healthcare with the advocacy group Protect Our Care.
