CWA District 4 backs union nurse fighting to expand rural broadband, keep good jobs in Wisconsin, and protect the right to organize
Momentum builds as labor continues to coalesce around Mitchell Berman
RACINE, WI – The Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 4, which represents workers across Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, has endorsed ER nurse Mitchell Berman for Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. In her endorsement letter, CWA District 4 Vice President Linda L. Hinton wrote to Berman that the union looks forward to “working with you, both during your campaign and while you represent Wisconsin’s 1st District in Congress.”
“CWA members keep Wisconsin connected, from the technicians bringing internet service to rural communities to the workers who keep our phones and networks running,” said Mitchell Berman. “More and more workers are joining this campaign, and I’m proud to have CWA with us. In Congress, I’ll fight to make sure the companies profiting off those connections keep good jobs here at home and treat the people who do this work fairly.”
CWA District 4 includes more than 200 local unions whose members work in telecommunications, information technology, media, manufacturing, health care, higher education, and local government. Their endorsement adds to a broad labor coalition behind Berman, including the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, the IBEW Wisconsin State Conference, United Steelworkers (USW), United Auto Workers (UAW), Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC), the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), and the Milwaukee Area Service and Hospitality Workers Union (MASH).
Mitchell Berman is running to stop subsidizing corporations that move jobs overseas and reward the ones that keep jobs in the U.S. and pay fair wages and benefits. He’ll expand rural broadband so every Wisconsin community can compete, and fight to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act so workers who want a union can form one without fear of retaliation. Learn more here. Incumbent Rep. Bryan Steil, by contrast, voted against the PRO Act and earned a 0% on CWA’s own congressional scorecard.
With just over a week until Election Day, WI–01 remains one of the closest House races in the country. All three public polls of the general election show the race within a single point, with the most recent showing Berman ahead 48-47, and labor’s growing support makes clear who working families are counting on to win it.
About Mitchell Berman
Born and raised in a one-stoplight town in rural Wisconsin, Mitchell Berman learned the values of community, integrity, and hard work from his parents. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, working three jobs and taking out student loans to earn his degree. Determined to build a life through grit and perseverance, not privilege, he started working at age 12 and became a union member while in college. Berman is an emergency room nurse who has served veterans at the VA for more than a decade. A devoted husband and father, he’s running for Congress to put people over politics, and to fight for Wisconsin families.
The First Congressional District is one of the most competitive in the country, and has been named a “Red to Blue” district by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The district encompasses Janesville, Kenosha, Racine, Beloit, Elkhorn, Whitewater, and the Milwaukee suburbs of Cudahy, St. Francis, and South Milwaukee. In 2024, Donald Trump carried the swing district narrowly with just 51 percent of the vote. In both the 2023 and 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court elections, Justices Janet Protasiewicz and Susan Crawford won the district handily by 6- and 6.5-point margins, respectively, and Justice Chris Taylor carried the district by ~20 points in April 2026.
