National environmental group backs ER nurse fighting to lower energy bills and protect Lake Michigan, as Bryan Steil cashes in on the data center boom

RACINE, WI – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will lower energy costs, build a clean energy economy, and strengthen democracy, today endorsed ER nurse Mitchell Berman for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District. Berman is one of six House candidates nationwide in LCV Action Fund’s latest slate of endorsements.

“Voters across the country are fed up with higher costs caused by Trump’s reckless policies, and they want real solutions to address skyrocketing energy bills and rising costs instead of his broken promises,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Sara Chieffo. “People are stuck paying the price for Trump’s failed energy policies while big polluters and billionaires make huge profits. LCV Action Fund is excited to support these candidates who will stand up to Big Polluters and protect the health of our communities, clean air and water, and free and fair elections.”

“Wisconsin families are watching their electric bills climb while Bryan Steil hands billions in tax breaks to the data centers driving those costs up,” said Mitchell Berman. “I’m proud to have LCV Action Fund’s support in this fight. In Congress, I’ll work to bring down energy costs, protect Lake Michigan and the clean water our communities depend on, clean up PFAS, and make sure working families stop footing the bill for big polluters.”

Steil has taken money from the data center industry and voted to give it $70 billion in special tax breaks, even as data centers swallow Wisconsin farmland, strain water supplies, and push up electricity prices for everyone else. The contrast with Berman couldn’t be sharper. Berman will fight to end tax breaks for data centers, ensure no Wisconsinite is left footing the bill for big tech’s energy demands, and protect rural Wisconsin’s treasured public lands.

LCV Action Fund’s backing arrives in the closing stretch of one of the most competitive House races in the country. Each of the three public polls of the general election has the race within a single point, with the latest showing Berman ahead 48-47. With a week and half until Election Day, momentum is on Berman’s side.

About Mitchell Berman

Born and raised in a one-stoplight town in rural Wisconsin, Mitchell Berman learned the values of community, integrity, and hard work from his parents. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, working three jobs and taking out student loans to earn his degree. Determined to build a life through grit and perseverance, not privilege, he started working at age 12 and became a union member while in college. Berman is an emergency room nurse who has served veterans at the VA for more than a decade. A devoted husband and father, he’s running for Congress to put people over politics, and to fight for Wisconsin families.

The First Congressional District is one of the most competitive in the country, and has been named a “Red to Blue” district by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The district encompasses Janesville, Kenosha, Racine, Beloit, Elkhorn, Whitewater, and the Milwaukee suburbs of Cudahy, St. Francis, and South Milwaukee. In 2024, Donald Trump carried the swing district narrowly with just 51 percent of the vote. In both the 2023 and 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court elections, Justices Janet Protasiewicz and Susan Crawford won the district handily by 6- and 6.5-point margins, respectively, and Justice Chris Taylor carried the district by ~20 points in April 2026.
