Milwaukee, WI — Milwaukee Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, Democratic nominee for Wisconsin Secretary of State, released the following statement today on the passing of labor leader and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, who died at her home in Bakersfield, California, at the age of 96.

“Today our community lost a pillar of the movement. Dolores Huerta spent her life fighting for the dignity of the people this country too often chose not to see. The farmworkers in the fields. The women pushed to the margins. The families who feed this nation. She co-founded a movement and she gave us the words that generations have carried into every fight since. Sí, se puede.

For me, and for so many Latinas in public life, Dolores was proof of what was possible. She showed us that you could stand toe to toe with the powerful and win, and that our voices belong in every room where decisions are made. So many of us are who we are because of her.

Her courage never faded. Even in her final year, she kept speaking truth and standing up for others, exactly as she had her whole life. That is who she was to the very end. Fearless, honest, and unwilling to let anyone carry their pain alone.

We honor Dolores best by continuing her work. By protecting workers. By standing with immigrant families. By making sure every person has a fair shot and a real voice in our democracy. Sí, se puede. Descanse en paz, Dolores.”
