ELKHORN, WI –– Tonight, Mitchell Berman won the race to represent Wisconsin’s First Congressional District, defeating incumbent Republican Representative Bryan Steil. Berman, an emergency room nurse, flipped a seat that Republicans have held for more than three decades.

Berman released the following statement:

“Tonight proves that when working people stand together, we can make a difference. As the son of a roofer and a foundry worker, a first-generation college graduate, and ER nurse, I’m honored to stand before you as your next Congressman. I know what it’s like to work hard and wonder whether the people in Washington understand what families like us are going through. Now, families like ours will have someone in Congress who’s on our side.

I’m so thankful to every voter, volunteer, and supporter who made this historic win possible, and to my family for all their support over the past year. I also want to thank Congressman Steil for his years of service to this district.

As the next Congressman for Wisconsin’s First District, I will bring the people of Southeast Wisconsin with me to Washington and fight every day to lower costs, fix our broken healthcare system, and end corruption in Washington. I promise to always stand up for Wisconsin families – not billionaires and big corporations.

Now let’s get to work!”

Berman ran on the belief that Congress needs an emergency room nurse — someone who knows firsthand how people are struggling back home — to bring working class experience and representation to Washington. He campaigned on lowering costs, fixing our broken healthcare system, and ending the corruption in Washington. In Congress, he’ll be a tireless champion for Wisconsin families and workers.
