DC Wrap: Gallagher, Tiffany only Wisconsin members of Congress to vote against temporary funding bill

U.S. Reps. Mike Gallagher and Tom Tiffany broke ranks with the rest of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation as the two voted against a bill to extend government funding. In the Senate, U.S. Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, late last night joined an 87-11 vote in favor of the temporary funding measure, sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk.

Evers announces plan to ease restrictions at Waupun, Green Bay prisons

The Evers administration wants to move nearly a quarter of those held at Waupun to other correctional facilities in the state to relieve staffing issues at the 19th-century prison and allow prisoners to again move more freely. Gov. Tony Evers also announced a study that will consider whether to decommission the prison, which dates back to the 1850s.

DC Wrap: Pocan says he wants to know Israel’s endgame, urges White House to work toward ceasefire

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan says he’s working on a letter to the White House asking the administration to press Israel to describe what the end of its war with Hamas will look like. The town of Vermont Dem in a WisPolitics Capitol Chats podcast this week said Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza, where many Palestinians live and where Hamas has been hiding many of the hostages taken during its Oct. 7 attack, is not a long-term solution. The attack that left more than 1,000 Israeli civilians dead prompted Israeli forces to respond with what Pocan called “wholesale bombing.”

GOP lawmakers demand Elections Commission appoint new administrator after DOJ filing contends commissioners have option to do so

GOP legislative leaders are demanding the Wisconsin Elections Commission appoint a new administrator after a filing from the agency’s DOJ attorneys contradicted statements from Dem commissioners that they had no power to do so. Republicans have asked a Dane County judge to rule the commission had a duty to appoint a new commissioner after Meagan Wolfe’s four-year term ended in July.
