DC Wrap: Pocan says he wants to know Israel’s endgame, urges White House to work toward ceasefire

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan says he’s working on a letter to the White House asking the administration to press Israel to describe what the end of its war with Hamas will look like. The town of Vermont Dem in a WisPolitics Capitol Chats podcast this week said Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza, where many Palestinians live and where Hamas has been hiding many of the hostages taken during its Oct. 7 attack, is not a long-term solution. The attack that left more than 1,000 Israeli civilians dead prompted Israeli forces to respond with what Pocan called “wholesale bombing.”

GOP lawmakers demand Elections Commission appoint new administrator after DOJ filing contends commissioners have option to do so

GOP legislative leaders are demanding the Wisconsin Elections Commission appoint a new administrator after a filing from the agency’s DOJ attorneys contradicted statements from Dem commissioners that they had no power to do so. Republicans have asked a Dane County judge to rule the commission had a duty to appoint a new commissioner after Meagan Wolfe’s four-year term ended in July.

Evers says blocking UW pay raises last straw that prompted suit against Legislature

Dem Gov. Tony Evers says he was compelled to sue the state Legislature after GOP lawmakers decided to “stick it” to UW employees by holding up their pay raises over a policy dispute. The suit, which asks the state Supreme Court to take the case directly, seeks to overturn three committee actions, including the move to block the raises at the behest of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester.
