I applaud congress’s recent vote to repeal the 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Perhaps now, for the first time in a long time, every student will have a chance to succeed.

In a classic “one size fits all” example of federal government overreach, ESSA handicapped teachers, administrators and school boards from across the country. Its unilateral federal edicts ignored one universal truth that is obvious to all but congressional liberals: The challenges of a rural school district are nothing like the challenges of an urban district like Milwaukee, Madison or Beloit. A point that clearly is either lost or ignored by Tony Evers.

Evers spent years becoming comfortable while turning the Superintendent of Public Instruction office into an emeritus position. He failed to give teachers the support, tools and protection they need while another generation of urban minority youth is destroyed. As superintendent of Public Instruction, I will not permit this to continue.

The impending repeal of ESSA will give local communities and school districts the strength and authority to save our kids. I fully support its repeal.
