RECAP: Leah Vukmir backed up her support for divisive, Washington special interest-selected U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh by misleading voters about the nomination process.

THE TRUTH: Senator Baldwin reached out to the White House seven times to meet with Judge Kavanaugh. The White House has refused to schedule a meeting, similar to other Senators who were never able to meet with the nominee.

The Cap Times: “Baldwin Said She’ll Oppose Kavanaugh. But She Still Plans To Meet With Him, And Also Wants To Review The Documents Associated With His Past Service.” “Baldwin said she’ll oppose Kavanaugh. But she still plans to meet with him, and also wants to review the documents associated with his past service, as it’s ‘really important to know a lot of his involvement in advising a previous president.’ Gousha asked why she intends to meet with him if ‘nothing he could say … could change your feeling about him?’ Baldwin only answered that ‘Wisconsinites need a fair, impartial, independent justice,’ due to the high stakes facing Supreme Court cases. She listed topics like abortion rights under Roe v. Wade, insurance coverage for contraception, environmental issues like protections for clean drinking water. ‘I have to say when you have a list (of potential Supreme Court nominees) that you have basically allowed other people to put together, folks with very focused special interests and you choose off that list, I think there’s a lot of reason for deep scrutiny of this nominee,’ she said. Asked if she’s worried that Republicans will use this issue to accuse her of being an obstructionist in her campaign, she said she thought special interests would continue raise the issue. ‘I think (special interests) want a senator who’s in their pocket who’s going to do their bidding, and I’m fighting for Wisconsin,’ she said.” [The Cap Times, 08/06/2018]

The Washington Free Beacon: “Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) Said Friday She Will Meet With Supreme Court Justice Nominee Brett Kavanaugh.” “Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) said Friday she will meet with Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh even though she’s already decided he’s ‘in the pocket of corporate special interests’ and she will vote against his confirmation.” [The Washington Free Beacon, 08/17/2018]

Baldwin On Kavanaugh Nomination: “I Do Plan On Meeting With Him.” [00:06] Gousha: Senator, let’s talk for a moment about Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, senate vote. You said you’ll oppose him – his nomination. I think you said — do you plan to meet with him at this point or has there been any change in your plans on that? [00:22] STB: I do plan on meeting with him. [00:24] Gousha: You do plan to meet with him? What would you hope to learn from him during that meeting? [00:27] STB: You know, one of the things that I hope it will be informed by is all the documents associated with his writings as a judge.” [UpFront With Mike Gousha, 08/05/2018]
